Matthew and I were on the Helen Philpots show on BBC Radio Humberside this morning talking about ukuleles, and the Hull Ukulele Group.

As you see, we really did smarten outselves up for the occasion, and even had a shave – not!
I had already consumed several LARGE coffees by the time we got into the studio – which might explain why i was just a little bit hyper…

(NB. When appearing on the radio its always a good idea to practice the song you are going to perform, and decide which version of the song you are going to do before hand. As it happens, Matthew decided to go for the Frank Sinatra version, while i went for Brian Heftones)

On a cold, wet, snowy evening in Hull, 17 people turned up for the first ever Hull Ukulele Group meeting
There was a mixture of complete beginners, beginners who could play the guitar, people who could already play the uke, a few musicians, and a person who I am reliably informed hid their ability under a very large bushel.
Amid a wash of Mahalos of every colour, and only two tuners (mine and my mates) we taught the beginners a G & a Cmaj7 and launched into ‘Anyone Else but you’, and by adding an extra chord each time went through ‘Five years time’, ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’ & ‘I walk the line’ (which was a firm favourite) In between this several people did a ‘turn’ of their own
It might have been the excitement in the air, or the booze, or the fact that the half a dozen badly out of tune ukuleles managed to cancel themselves out – but it all sounded ace to me
It was a brilliant night, and everyone was so keen to meet up again that we are getting back together in two weeks time (23rd Feb)
I got home on Monday night very soggy & slightly worse for wear, but very happy
I have now set up a Hull Ukulele Group website, which will hopefully be the group’s new home
Thanks to Ian for putting this in this Fridays Hull Daily Mail

As a fine red blooded male my next course of action after finding the above photo was to investigate the ‘Kitten On The Keys’ photostream in very close detail to see if i could find any more.. er… ukuleles
It was hard very distracting work, but i managed to find a couple ![]()
