I decided to knock out a quick chord sheet for Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash in honor of Bonfire night last Thursday. We’re going to have a go of it at this Monday’s Hull Ukulele Group.
Its only 3 chords – G, C, D, and its so familiar that it was almost a pointless exercise doing it! BUT ive tabbed out the Brass parts for ukulele which makes it much more fun if theres more than one of you!!

Originally performed by Depeche Mode, and covered by Nouvelle Vague, The Saturdays, and now a few members of the Hull Ukulele Group.
We made the video a while back, but ive only just got round to writing up a decent version of the chordsheet
Just cant get enough – Depeche Mode
As you’ll see, theres nothing complicated about it, and i think it sounds quite nice on the uke

Cracking song this one!! Like all good punk songs, the faster you play it the better it sounds
The majority of the song is pretty easy, the trick is to get the changes right at the end of the “You should’nt have fallen in love with” line. The best way for me to explain it, is to spell it out phonetically. Its ‘Cee-Cee Eff-Cee, Cee-Cee-Eff-Cee’. The same pattern is used on the Bb/Eb bit.
Ever Fallen In Love – The Buzzcocks
Theres also a Db that pops up at the end. On the chord sheet ive written this as 4111, but it could also be played as 4456. Either way, you then just need to slide everything down 1 fret to play the C.
EPIC WIN!!!
There arent enough 29 piece Swedish pop groups in the world, as far as i’m concerned. Its fortunate then that we have ‘I’m from Barcelona’…
This is a great song, its dead easy, and would sound good with a ukulele group or a load people singing
Im from Barcelona – We’re from Barcelona
Why are ‘I’m From Barcelona’ huge, and why was’nt this song No1 all over the world!?
I love the Sheffield versatile singer/songwriter John Shuttleworth. This song explores the trauma of having two tubs of margarine on the go at the same time – eeep!!
A rather clever chap called Matt Hawkins has designed this beautiful papercraft model of a monkey sat on a half-moon playing a ukulele. Im sorely tempted to make a purchase, but dont know if could do it justice. It reminds me of the Woody Allen film ‘Sweet and low down’
Its a limited print of 200, available to buy and build yourself here

In the real world, part of my job involves funding Family Learning and Family Literacy, Language, and Numeracy projects. Its great to see that a project down in Corby have used their funding to get parents and children to make their own ukes – out of margarine tubs, fishing line, and recycled wood
