12 Oct 09 Make a ukulele from a margarine tub

In the real world, part of my job involves funding Family Learning and Family Literacy, Language, and Numeracy projects. Its great to see that a project down in Corby have used their funding to get parents and children to make their own ukes – out of margarine tubs, fishing line, and recycled wood :D

02 Oct 09 Chord Friday: I kissed a girl – Katey Perry

The first of what will no doubt be a very short run series of songs that I will post on a Friday!!
Dont get me wrong, i have loads of new chord sheets of ukulele knocking around, its just that i’m in no way organised enough to keep posting them on a Friday!

First up, I kissed a girl by Katey Perry. I performed this at the recent Hull Ukulele Cabaret. (For the sake of comedy, i kissed a boy ;) ) In my mind i’m sure i rocked!!!, but as i have said before, If only my singing ability matched my self confidence ;)

I kissed a girl – Katy Perry

The chords are dead easy, there are only 4 of them, its just a matter of getting the timing right!!

30 Sep 09 Top 3 “driving while playing the ukuele” videos

One word you can’t use to describe the ukulele is ‘dangerous’.
Certainly not ‘dangerous’ in a “your mother warned you about it” kind of way, or ‘dangerous’ in a “mad, bad, ukulele playing, and dangerous to know” kind of way.
So its always pretty good when people push the boundaries of what is considered appropriate behavior with a ukulele. And lets face it, playing the ukulele while driving a car is a pretty fucking stupid and dangerous thing to do. Im surprised i havent tried it yet :D

Its also pleasing to see that ladies can be just as brilliantly stupid as men (even ukulele superstar ones)

So, in no particular order…

GREAT WORK – TRY THIS AT HOME!!
Tell the coppers i said it was OK ;)

10 Aug 09 My new Uke

My New Koaloha uke arrived today – yay!!! *does happy dance*
Including P&P, it cost £320 from MusicGuyMic, but then i got completely shafted by Customs, and had to pay another £73 on VAT. – But you know what, it was worth it.

Ive only managed a quick play, but its gorgeous. What has surprised me is just how LOUD it is!! (But that might be because i’m used to thrashing a £9 Makala)

I’ll try and get some footage on Youtube at some point, but in the meantime, here are a few pics…

20 Jul 09 Fuckin hell!, its an actual monkey playing an actual ukulele

22 Jun 09 This is all kinds of wrong…

11 Jun 09 47 Ginger Headed Sailors

Im a big Jeeves and Wooster fan. Both of the books and the 1990′s TV show. Whoever came up with the idea of casting Stephen Fry & Hugh Laurie as the two main characters deserves a knighthood and a Nobel Peace Prize at the very very least. Mrs Zym and I were watching an old DVD of it the other night and there was song featured called ’47 Ginger Headed Sailors’ – and much to my amazement, its a genuine song!

Something that many people dont realise is that back in the 20s, 30s, & 40,s the ukulele was incredible popular and most of the sheet music available at the time included ukulele chords along with the music notation. It would appear that our fine Australian cousins have an archive of old (mainly pre-1930s) sheet music available to buy or download for over at The National Library of Australia

Click the fantastic cover to be transported back in time

You can search their archive here http://catalogue.nla.gov.au/ – and if you find any other gems, give me a shout :)
