The Hull Ukulele Group (HUG) had a 80s evening a few weeks back, and this is one of the songs that proved to be a hit.
Unfortunately i cant embed the actual video for this, but heres the song for those who arent familar.
Theres a little bit of ‘artistic licence with regards to the structure here, but its a pretty easy one to play. Get the riff right and it will sound ace
Walking on Sunshine – Katrina and the Waves
Just make sure everyone joins in with the ‘Whoahs’!!
I love this song. I have done for years and years. Its perhaps a little ‘twee’ conpared to some of The Velvet Undergound’s earlier stuff, but it has that same ‘show tunes’ feel that features in Lou Reed’s later work. It appeared on their 3rd album, and was sung by the drummer, Maureen (Mo) Tucker
After Hours – The Velvet Underground
So put those drum sticks down and get warbling along to this one in a Mo’ Tucker Stylee
Cracking song this one!! Like all good punk songs, the faster you play it the better it sounds
The majority of the song is pretty easy, the trick is to get the changes right at the end of the “You should’nt have fallen in love with” line. The best way for me to explain it, is to spell it out phonetically. Its ‘Cee-Cee Eff-Cee, Cee-Cee-Eff-Cee’. The same pattern is used on the Bb/Eb bit.
Ever Fallen In Love – The Buzzcocks
Theres also a Db that pops up at the end. On the chord sheet ive written this as 4111, but it could also be played as 4456. Either way, you then just need to slide everything down 1 fret to play the C.
A rather clever chap called Matt Hawkins has designed this beautiful papercraft model of a monkey sat on a half-moon playing a ukulele. Im sorely tempted to make a purchase, but dont know if could do it justice. It reminds me of the Woody Allen film ‘Sweet and low down’
Its a limited print of 200, available to buy and build yourself here

What started as a joke in the office, er…. perhaps should have remained one!!
This is my ‘tribute’ to Mrs Pontipine, a stop motion puppet with children, from Cbeebies ‘In the night garden’. I guess this is what happens when you have a kid and start watching childrens programmes through adult eyes (or maybe its just me?)
I feel a bit mixed about this song actually. Half of me is quite proud that ive written and recorded my very first song. But the other half feels nothing but shame for writing and recording a song about essentially wanting the fuck a puppet from a childrens TV show! ![]()
(i must also point out that the’ teeny tiny hole’ as actually a location within the show – honest!!)

Matthew and I were on the Helen Philpots show on BBC Radio Humberside this morning talking about ukuleles, and the Hull Ukulele Group.

As you see, we really did smarten outselves up for the occasion, and even had a shave – not!
I had already consumed several LARGE coffees by the time we got into the studio – which might explain why i was just a little bit hyper…

(NB. When appearing on the radio its always a good idea to practice the song you are going to perform, and decide which version of the song you are going to do before hand. As it happens, Matthew decided to go for the Frank Sinatra version, while i went for Brian Heftones)
